About the Miami Obedience Club Are you tired of ....... being dragged down the street by your dog ? chasing your dog all over the back yard when it's time to come in ? apologizing to your guest because your dog is jumping all over them and OUT OF CONTROL ? We CAN help You !!!!!!! Dogs are as loving and obedient as you will allow them to be. A dog is born with few, if any, preconceived ideas of how to behave around people and other dogs. We must try to give our dog the best environment possible in order to help make the dog a friendly, loveable pet. Miami Obedience Club, Inc. offers an opportunity for you and your adult dog or puppy to participate in group-oriented training sessions with experienced instructors. Classes are designed to "train" you to train your dog. Classes are offered in Puppy Training, Beginning and Advanced Obedience, Obedience Trial Preparation and Conformation. Included in a section below is an outline of the basics covered in each class. HOW THE MIAMI OBEDIENCE CLUB WAS FOUNDED ( The following history of MOC was written by Doris Lenahan some time ago and has been only slightly revised ) While attending a dog Obedience class being held in Perrine, a group of us became friendly. After receiving enough training with our dogs, we decided to enter our dogs in A.K.C. Obedience Trials. After entering many trials, we became interested in joining an A.K.C. Obedience Club. The nearest club was in Hollywood, and here we are in the southern part of Miami. We then started discussing organizing an Obedience Club of our own in Southwest Miami. We invited anyone we knew who was interested in Obedience training to attend a meeting which was held on December 11, 1961. After a general discussion explaining the many purposes of an Obedience Club, we decided decided that an election of officers would be held so the functions of the Club could begin. A letter was drawn up to be sent to the American Kennel Club, stating our intentions to be an A.K.C. Sanctioned Club. After much correspondence to A.K.C. they finally approved our Club to hold Sanctioned Matches. This would be out test, to prove to A.K.C. that we could put on Trials. We had two so called "OB" Matches held on September 23, 1962, and January 6, 1963. After these, we were allowed to hold two "OA" Matches. These were held on April 7, 1963, and October 13, 1963. Twenty-eight months after our first meeting, we finally reached our goal by being given permission to hold our FIRST A.K.C. Licensed Trial, which was held on April 19 1964. Which in turn made Miami Obedience Club a Licensed A.K.C. Obedience Club. Class Descriptions Puppy Class - for dogs 3 to 5 months old When a puppy is 10 to 12 weeks old he is beginning to cope with new places, and is naturally curious. This transition period can greatly affect how the puppy will be as an adult. The objectives of the PUPPY CLASS are: To be able to understand VERY BASIC commands including sit, stand, stay, walk on a lead, and come when called (recall). To learn how to handle PROBLEMS, including house-training, biting and chewing, jumping, excessive barking, and other behavioral problems. To develop INCREASED CONFIDENCE by completing obstacle courses and participating in other fun group challenges. To have the opportunity to learn SOCIALIZATION skills with other people and other dogs. This is great to assist your puppy in losing his fear of strangers (including the veterinarian ). Don't worry, the dog will still guard the house !!! To learn about BASIC CANINE BEHAVIOR AND HANDLING, including puppy learning cycles and development, picking up your puppy, clipping nails, good ear hygiene, and a variety of grooming tips. Number of classes---6 Class Duration --1 hour Level 1 - Beginning Obedience - for dogs 5 months or older It takes time and repetition to train a dog. Some dogs will learn faster than others. The LEVEL 1 class offers you an opportunity to facilitate your dog's learning through the camaraderie of a group and education by example. LEVEL 1 class goals are: Learning and enforcing the SIT and STAY commands. Increasing the duration in which you expect the dog to stay. Learning and enforcing the "HEEL" command and walking on a lead without pulling. Teach the dog to stay with you while varying the pace and direction in which you walk. Teaching the AUTOMATIC SIT, and the DOWN and DOWN-STAY. Teaching the COME-FRONT or RECALL; enforcing that the dog comes to you when called. Teaching the STAND and STAND FOR EXAM commands. Working with the dog on all the above commands while ADDING DISTRACTIONS to each exercise to enforce the dogs understanding of each command. Number of classes---8 Class duration--1 hour Level 2-Novice... For dogs who completed Level 1 You have mastered the basics taught in the Beginner Class, and you LIKE IT. You've seen the "experienced" dogs and handlers; you want to continue training or even to compete. To continue to enforce the SIT and SIT STAY commands, increasing both the duration of the sit (goal: 3 minutes) and distance between dog and handler (goal: off leash 15 feet). Continue working on the "HEEL" command, work on proper position, varying gaits and change of direction. Increase duration of DOWN STAY (goal: 5 minutes) as well as handler distance from dog (goal: off leash 15 feet). Continue working on the RECALL, striving for brisk come-fronts and straight sits. Teach the FINISH. Add the "finish" to the "recall" exercise. Continue working on the STAND FOR EXAM, increasing distance between the dog and handler, and adding the return to dog. Continue to add DISTRACTIONS: work on maintaining dogs attention to handler. Number of classes---8 Class duration--1 hour Level 3-Advanced Obedience...For Novice Graduates You and your dog have become a team ! You're having a GREAT time and you want to go on. Most of the people at this stage of training have the goal of entering Obedience competitions. Your dog is fairly steady on the STAY commands, but you never get enough work on this, so you keep on working ( and maybe even go "out of sight"?) You never get enough of that "HEELING". Always more work to do: first the dog's lagging, then the dog's forging. And whatever happened to that AUTOMATIC SIT; its crooked, and sooooo slow, or what! There's no sit at all.(Oh no, I'd better go back to BASIC)! Continue working on the RECALL (you know, the command your dog knew last week, but this week seems to have completely forgotten.) Continue working on ATTENTION, an essential ingredient if you ever want to compete. Commiserate with and discuss problem solving with other trainers to assist in resolving issues, or at least to make you feel less on your own. Problems are normal! Number of classes---8 Class duration--1 hour CONFORMATION - For dogs 4 months and older CONFORMATION CLASSES are designed to provide instruction on the proper "handling" of your pure-bred dog; how to "show off" your dogs strongest and best conformation characteristics: Standards set by the AKC for each breed identifying desired physical characteristics such as ear set, body shape, gait, etc. You do not need to sign up ahead of time for this class; to attend a CONFORMATION CLASS, simply purchase a ticket at the MOC ADMINISTRATION DESK each night you wish to attend. Number of classes -- Each Monday Class duration -- Approx. 1 hour Other Specialty Classes From time to time, Miami Obedience Club, Inc. also offers a variety of SPECIALTY CLASSES including the following: DRILL CLASS: Designed to provide handlers and dogs who have completed BASIC OBEDIENCE an opportunity to continue to work on and fine tune their Obedience skills in a formalized group setting. SHENANIGANS: a FUN AND GAMES class designed for handlers and dogs that have a NOVICE SKILL LEVEL. The "handler/dog team" will participate in a number of fun exercises which will enhance the dogs confidence, skill level and socialization skills.
