Internationally-published
author of eleven books and hundreds of short pieces. Strong oral skills,
including teaching and public speaking. Extensive experience in all areas of
book editing, from story conception to manuscript evaluation to manuscript
marketing and the marketing and promotion of the finished book. Also a
criminologist.
PROFESSIONAL
SKILLS
Writing
1977-Present.
Award-winning author of the Ellis Portal series of mystery novels.
Published author of five romance novels. Published author of two book-length
poetry collections. Have also published essays, reviews, articles and how-to

Teaching
2003.
Taught a course in novel writing at Loyalist College.
1985-Present.
Workshop leader across Canada and in the U. S. on a wide variety of topics
pertaining to writing and crime fiction. (See list of recent workshops)
1991-1995.
Pioneered a course in real-life criminology for crime writers, called
Crimewriting for Sleuths, which I taught for the Toronto Board of Education and
the Etobicoke School of the Arts.
1986.
Taught a course in romance writing at Seneca College.
Editing
1990-Present.
Free-lance book editor for select private clients, including Christopher
Ondaatje. Have assisted prominent Canadians to write autobiographical works,
including Patricia Starr and Metropolitan Toronto Police Historian John "Copperjack"
Webster. Supervise teams of editors working on complex photojournalism books and
liaise between editorial team, author, book designer and production workers.
1979-1982.
Full-time editor at Harlequin Enterprises Limited. Progressed from editorial
assistant to senior editor. Developed mass-market romance lines. Edited romance
novels. Monitored marketing trends and reader preferences. Appeared in Canada
and the U. S. as company representative to readers and prospective authors.
Criminology
1996-Present.
Court Services Officer, Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Oversee decorum in
daily criminal trials and provide for the safety and comfort of Superior Court
Justices when they are on the bench.
1995-1996.
U.S. Consulate, Toronto, Ontario. Contract security officer. Monitored visa
section and assisted visa applicants to follow procedures. Provided security at
entrances to consulate. Assisted American citizens to access consulate services.
1992-1995.
Free-lance consultant specializing in public education on the topic of parole,
halfway houses and neighborhood safety. Chief client: Correctional Service
Canada.
1989-1992.
Director of Community Relations, Elizabeth Fry Society of Toronto. Responsible
for public and government relations for this agency that serves women in
conflict with the law.
